The Unexpected Quest

The Unexpected Quest is a casual urban planning and survival strategy game where you will have to control unusual people who are ready to work hard and fight everyone…

The sailors suffered a shipwreck near unknown shores. Help the survivors find the rest of the crew. First, make fires all along the coast. These fires will warm up the wounded, and those who are lost will be able to see the light and join their companions. There are a lot of things to do in order to survive in this medieval fantasy quest, but we do not recommend to start working on empty belly. Find some food in the ship wreckage and have a good meal. Now you can embark on the process of gathering wood and mining gold to build mills, sawmills and other buildings. They will allow you not to think about where to get necessary resources.

You will need gold to hire workers and special characters who are able to fight intruders like zombies and other aggressive evil spirits. Archers, swordsmen and magicians will cope with the most unexpected tasks and help you move forward to the next levels. Ordinary workers unable to fight the enemies will perform simple domestic tasks. Take advantage of useful bonuses in the form of healing potions, totems and magic spells so that the work is done faster and sailors can get home as soon as possible.

What's ahead for you in The Unexpected Quest?

  • Explore quiet villages, snow-capped mountaintops, impenetrable forests, and foul-smelling swamps!
  • Collect resources, build bridges over turbulent rivers, repair buildings, and build new ones!
  • Save up your gold, complete quests, and open chests to get magic items and potions!
  • Hire experienced soldiers, upgrade their armor and weapons, fight, and conquer!

The biggest problem with The Unexpected Quest, is that it is advertised wrongly.

The developers of The Unexpected Quest might well have been inspired to create a game after playing Warcraft 3 and The Settlers, but The Unexpected Quest has almost nothing in common with said games.

The Unexpected Quest in actual fact has a lot more in common with the time management genre such as the 12 Labours, Weather Lord, Golden Rails and Rescue Team games and if you like those, then I think it's fair to say you'll like this.

The Unexpected Quest is a more advanced type of game compared to those stated above, a few examples are...

1. The gameplay area isn't just a static single screen, it is much larger.

2. To defeat enemies you don't pay resources to a hero to go and beat them up, you actually hire troops that have health bars, that if taken care of, stay with you through the level.

3. Rather than abilities that are on a cooldown, you collect/make single use potions and powerups, and also have an inventory so that you can carry some over to use in later missions.

4. Rather than the goal for each level being to exit the map, each level has a main objective and multiple secondary objectives.

The core gameplay loop however is the same, use your workers to collect resources and build buildings that generate resources, expand population limit or allow the recruitment of various types of troops, then use said resources/troops to clear obstacles and defeat enemies.

While The Unexpected Quest is a more advanced type of time management game, technically it isn't actually a time management game, as there isn't a timer, so while more advanced, it is a lot easier to 100% the game compared to some... and yes I am referring to some of the Beat the Dev achievements in the 12 Labours series.

One potential negative however, is the length of the game, there are far less levels then there is in other games of the genre that I mentioned above. Thus far, I've completed half the levels in 3 hours, but, each level is getting progressively longer/larger so I'd guess that there's about 10 hours of gameplay on offer for someone experienced in the genre.

Note that while the levels are much, much longer and larger than similar types of games, you can thankfully save mid game.

This is a really fun game to play. Need to figure out certain levels before you just jump into it.

Little relaxed map-clearing "adventure" game. Lovely art style, wit no time pressures or anything, (resources generate by themselves), just storyline with small puzzles such as which nodes to unlock first etc. Set your own challenge to see how fast you can complete the adventure.

This is a resource management game. The part of solving puzzles is not important because all puzzles are self-explanatory. Player only needs to gather and accumulate enough resources.

Hint and Tips:
1. Sell a lot of resources and upgrade your weapons to max level.
2. It's very difficult to get all three stars in the early missions. So I beat the game first, then bring my best equipment to the previous missions.

Is very short, you have 8 "story" missions and 4 trials of sorts. You are done in a few hours. That being said the game is kind of fun, there is no difficulty to the story missions, the story is unimportant, you collect stuff, upgrade units and do some puzzles, simple and enjoyable. The trials offer some difficulty and the possibility of failing. It is not a bad way to waste a few hours.

Tis a fun way to relax. Visually appealing, mentally stimulating, can play casually or really work your brain and puzzle out the perfect connections. Two thumbs up!

If you like games where you can build anything and let your imagination go hog wild, get this medieval fantasy masterpiece.

This game is fine, however its ridiculously short and far to easy. It takes maybe 4 hours to finish and to me, that is not worth it. The game play lacks any challenge, you basically always have to clear things in the same order. Its cute and looks pretty, so my eight year old likes it.
