Take charge of the Yankees or the Confederates and wipe out your enemy in The Bluecoats: North vs. South, a remastered version of the classic strategy game released in 1990. This time, you can concentrate on fighting your opponent, not the interface, as the graphics and controls have been enhanced to match today's standards. Of course, the gameplay is as fun as it ever was, with virtual generals able to control every aspect of their campaign from the safety of their computer chair.

Assault and capture enemy forts, protect your railroads and keep an eye out for natives and bandits as you conquer and claim as much territory as you can. To emerge from the smoke of battle in one piece, you'll need to master taking turns, win real time battles and survive shoot outs in which the odds are against you. Whether you play alone or with others, the objective is the same: VICTORY!

Overall the game is pretty bad. The designer should have spent more time on the mechanics of the game. The visuals are fairly decent renderings as cartoons. The biggest issue is that the lack of tutorials. In the field when targeting an enemy unit, you will need to continue to click on the enemy to fire at them. In the fort-mode when they peek you can kill them, however this is next to impossible without a mouse for quicker reaction speeds. If you place yourself as strong and the Comp as weak it makes for a pretty quick game as long as you take the correct path and stay on the offensive as much as possible. The concept is solid, however more time spent ironing out the game could have made this a much more enjoyable game.

All in all it's a cute little game. pretty short and very repetitive... there's not a lot to do in it. works well on the nostalgic aspect of the original oldie.

Not a very long game to finish, took me 2-3 hours to complete all levels and some extra on highest difficulty. It has some replay value, but I don't think too much unless you wanna play a lot of multiplayer and have a friend who's game. Despite it being short, I found it quit entertaining and a nice game to play through. The controls in first-person aren't that good and it takes a bit to get used to the different game modes, but the strategy is quite fun and a good different break from most other strategy games.

After I finished, I looked the game up and found videos of the original Amiga version, and I must say that this version is definitely lacking some of the originals fun themes. The comic it is based on, while never one of my favorite, is after all a comedy, so I would have preferred this remastered version to stay more faithful to the original which seems to have a lot of very fun noises and setups that this remastered version lacks. Still, I found this a good little game, but would have preferred more of the fun from the original.
