Carl Stein, a small cog in a huge and all-seeing state machine, got appointed to the post of a manager of an apartment building. Together with his family, he settles in an apartment given to them and takes up his duties: to settle the tenants, to collect residence fee from them, to repair breakdowns and to identify unreliable anti-state elements among these tenants.

That’s how this incredible story begins, and, depending on your actions, it can end at any time: you and your family can be killed, arrested, they can die because of lack of medicines or be destroyed for deliberate disobedience to the authorities. The world of Carl Stein is a permanent choice: to be honest or to be a traitor, to be an informer or a concealer, to support the revolution or fight it. Everything you do will affect the further story of the character and his family, and the end of this game depends only on you.

Upon an order of a government you will have to spy on tenants, to dig up dirt and write reports on them. You can take the initiative: to plant prohibited items on the tenants, to blackmail them or arrange secret searches. For each completed task you will be awarded by the state with money and reputation points, which you can use to purchase a new spy equipment. You will need money for more complicated tasks: depending on which course of conduct you have chosen for the character, you will need funds either for immigration, for bribes, or for maintaining the existing system.

A special feature of the game is a huge number of options for the development of events. Every action you’ve ever made influences the development of the plot, every decision of yours changes the world around you, every word can turn out to be fatal. Whom you will become at the end of the game depends on you, but remember that freedom of will in this world is punished in the most brutal way!

Beholder — the choice is yours...

  • In this gloomy totalitarian future all people’s lives belong to the State!
  • Your post is the manager of an apartment building!
  • Your job is to eavesdrop and peep!
  • Your duty is to report on unreliable citizens!
  • Will you stand the test of power?

  • Will you be able to report on a person who can save your loved ones?
  • All choices have consequences, so stay among those who could make the right choice!

It's fun. My first attempt resulted in my son getting kicked out of university and my daughter dying, for I couldn't make enough money to save her. Both these events made me wondering whether the dystopian regime presented in the game isn't actually a capitalist one. But it's fun. Don't eat apples.

It takes a bit to get into this game, mainly since it's rather fast paced and a lot of the mechanics are explored on the go.
The atmosphere and setting are great, it is really easy to immerse yourself into the world. The gameplay however can be stressful and even frustrating at times. If you're looking for a casually fun, chill game, you're better off looking somewhere else!
I'd recommend playing this blind at first, not looking up anything and just experiencing it on your own. After a few runs, researching guides and strategies to go for a more efficient run or a specific ending can be fun too, but it takes away from some of the strengths of Beholder.

A richer version of Papers, please. Have you seen that German movie called Das Leben des Anderen (The lives of Others)? In this game you play the government guy, and you spy on the neighbours of your building. As in Papers please you can choose to be merciful and let people live their lives or be a government buttlicker and get as much money as you can from everyone. Only you also need to take care of your family, which means sometimes you will be forced to be a piece of ????.
Great game, very original with a cool aesthetic and a tense atmosphere. You almost always have something to do, so you won't mind going back and redoing things to change the outcome of your decision.

Basically fallout shelter but really demented. Pay your bills, sometimes others bills, rent rooms, fix rooms, fix devices, and other while trying to spy on tenants and maintain your family while getting tasks from the directive. This game on the hard difficulty will test your time management skills to its fullest, while you try do do the right thing for everyone. Not much to say about easy mode other than its easier then hard, less tools needed, and less pressure on time that you have. Great game!

This game could be difficult at the start when you have no idea what can be done. Once you acquired the know-how, it becomes quite straightforward. In the end, it's your choice to decide who to sacrifice.
To save everyone is not feasible here if not impossible.

This game was a pretty awesome simulation of a living in a dystopian society. While the premise seems simple, it becomes complex with the sheer amount of choice that it provides. Want a tenant to move out for a quest? Do you help them move out legitimately by helping them find their passport? Do you threaten or blackmail them? Do you catch illegal activities in their home? You can even plant illegal items into their home and have them arrested for it. It's pretty wild. The important thing seems to be doing whatever you need to do to keep your business running while keeping the tenants, your family, the government, and the rebels happy. Angering any one of these can lead to a bad situation and tough choices.

The pros; Great story. Fun, cartoon-like visuals hiding a dark premise. Excellent player choice. MANY different endings. Many ways to solve quest requirements.

The Cons; Very short (Main story can be completed within one afternoon). Very limited pools of tenants. The tenants are story driven, not randomized.

Overall, a fun experience that is well worth the price and well worth checking out. 4/5

I don't know what to say that hasn't been said. Almost everything about this is great. The branching storyline. The espionage on your tenants. The... everything. Just a spectacular game, 5 stars.

Great management game, amazing art style adding to Orwellian climate (yes I know, it's not a revolutionary observation but how could you miss that in Beholder review?), interesting gameplay, few ways to play it, many endings. You can replay this game over and over again. And it's not expensive either. I recommend it to everyone and especially fans of dystopias and Orwell's works.

Your decisions really matter and there are some very difficult decisions to be made. Replay value is huge as you'd want to play through multiple times!
